While many acknowledge substance abusers in families and the workplace, not everyone admits their presence in the congregation. But according to Elder Ron Simmons, the church is not exempt from people fighting drug or alcohol problems.

"Where is the church in this battle concerning addiction? Even with a church on every corner, it seems like the addiction problem has gotten worse," noted Elder Simmons.

Ministries seeking to address this issue should consider starting a Free N One Recovery Program, a national organization that trains facilitators to run successful support groups.

As one of the co-founders, Elder Simmons has helped start Free N One chapters in Los Angeles, West Virginia, Chicago, Louisiana, Boston, Milwaukee and Seattle.

The program, which is rooted in scripture, offers counseling, educational and rehabilitative services on the prevention and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse. The training topics cover The Disease of Addiction, Conducting a Successful Meeting, The Definition of Recovery and The Process of Recovery.

"The church can no longer sit idle when drugs and alcohol addiction is the No. 1 killer and destroyer of families in our community today! For this battle, the church has to work together to win a winnable war," said Elder Simmons.

The next training sessions in Los Angeles are scheduled for June 19 through June 22, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For information and location, call (323) 295-0009 or visit free-n-one.org.
