Congresswoman Richardson Applauds Awarding of a Federal Highway Administration Grant to CALTRANS for Support of Minority and Women Owned Businesses

Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced the awarding of an $867,114 Federal Highway Administration grant to the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS). The grant will be used to increase the number of businesses operated by minorities, women and other disadvantaged groups businesses participating in federal-aid highway construction contracts.

"This grant will be a big boost both for improving California's roads and bridges and for supporting minority and women owned businesses across the state and especially here in the 37th District, where those businesses are the lifeblood of the community," Congresswoman Richardson said. "Throughout the years, CALTRANS has worked to increase opportunities for businesses owned by minorities, women and disadvantaged groups and this grant allows them to continue to help these businesses compete and grow."

The grant will be used by CALTRANS DBE program, which helps qualifying firms to get federal-funded transportation related construction contracts and increase their capacity to bid on and win contracts outside of the program.

"With the 37th District still facing more than 20 percent unemployment in some areas, including several of our minority neighborhoods, this grant will be able to build up local businesses by giving them the tools they need to compete, which will result in them being able to grow and additional hire workers," Congresswoman Richardson added.
