MILESTONE ACHIEVED WITH CANOPY INSTALLATION AT THE WESTERN STATION OF THE EXPO LINE PROJECT
Progress continues on the Expo Light Rail Line with the installation of decorative canopies at the Western Station. This construction milestone is significant for the Light Rail project as final design elements of the Expo Line are beginning to take shape.
Paragon Steel, a sub-contractor with FFP (FCI/Fluor/Parsons), began installing the posts for the canopies in November 2009, and in late December, the first canopy went up on the eastside platform of the Western Station. Roland Genick, Chief Architect Rail & Transit Systems for Parsons, explained the significance of the weave design for the entire Expo Rail project, "The weaving elements of the station canopies are a key component of the overall aesthetic of the light rail line in that they embody the main aim of this infrastructure project-to bring communities together and allow individuals to connect with each other," said Genick.
The weave design element is also incorporated into the soundwalls that have been installed in various areas of the alignment.
Next steps toward completion of the stations include paving walkways and platforms, along with installation of ticket machines, benches and works of art.
The Exposition Light Rail Transit Line (Expo Line) will travel along the Exposition railroad Right-of-way (ROW) between downtown Los Angeles and Culver City. It will share a track and two stations (7th St/Metro Center and Pico) with the Metro Blue Line as it leaves downtown Los Angeles. It then will travel along the Exposition ROW to the current terminus at Venice/Robertson. Along with the Venice/Robertson station, nine new stations will be constructed, including the 23rd Street station, Jefferson/USC station, Expo Park/USC station, as well as stations at Vermont, Western, Crenshaw, La Brea and La Cienega.
