LAX Modernization

CNS--The Los Angeles Airport Commission today approved a $205 million contract for the Bradley West Gates project at LAX and a $95 million contract for taxiway improvements.

The Bradley West Gates project is a component of the LAX Modernization Plan. Both contracts still require the approval of the Los Angeles City Council.

LAX public relations specialist Albert Rodriguez said the $205 million contract with Walsh Austin Joint Venture ``lays the groundwork'' for two new concourses and nine new boarding gates at the Tom Bradley International Terminal's west side.

Specifically, it calls for creating an area for a new taxiway, and building the steel frames, metal decks and exterior walls of new boarding gates.

Meanwhile, the $95 million contract with Flatiron West will relocate an existing taxiway nearly 250 feet to the west, in order to accommodate the construction of the new concourses at the Bradley Terminal.

Aside from new concourses and boarding gates, the Bradley Terminal renovation also includes dual passenger loading bridges; larger passenger lounges; aircraft tarmac areas and associated structures; and aircraft support equipment to accommodate new-generation aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing B787.

Other components of the LAX modernization plan include upgrading customs and border protection facilities and building secured corridors between Terminals 3 and 4 and the Bradley Terminal so passengers with connecting flights do not have to exit the terminals and go through security screening again. In addition is construction of 1.25 million square feet of space for food/beverage and retail concessions and other passenger amenities located beyond passenger security screening.

The improvements are scheduled for completion in spring 2013.

Funds for the projects will come from LAX's operating revenues, capital improvement program funds, fees from airlines, passenger facilities charges and airport revenue bond proceeds.
