Then Came November
I hope some of you remember, that on the First day of November, in 1945,A Black man by the name of John H Johnson set his achievements high, by publishing the first issue of Ebony magazine and to this day that publication thrives.
On November 5th of 1968, Shirley Chisholm, a woman who we all should appreciate, became the first Black female elected to Congress, representing Brooklyn, Bedford-Stuyvesant.
As we continue on the path of progress, let us reflect upon a time where people of color were forced to live unbalanced, James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson composed a reason to "Lift Every Voice and Sing". When I listen to that song it strengthens me, it also gives me a sense of peace and belief in everyone, they shared that with us on November 6th, 1901.
With grace viewed as pristine, Janet Collins paved the way for many other Black women on November 13th, as a ballerina with the Metropolitan Opera Company. That took place in 1951, which happen to be the same year that Jet Magazine found publication, proudly on November first.
Born into Slavery and then set free by the Civil War, Booker T Washington is also a man to be adored. Unfortunately, his home going was November 14th, 1915; fortunately his teachings will forever be explored.
On November 20th 1865, Howard University became an institution where Black education could thrive, also a place where Thurgood Marshall learned how to argue a litigation case. He was a true human prize, a man to be idolized. He on November 29th became the first Black Supreme Court Judge and a hero for all man to recognize.
As the era of Jim Crow came to an end many of our forefathers still sang the blues, yet on bright note, November 25th 1955 brought change of those separation rules, banned were the laws of segregation on buses and terminals.
This leads to a present day mission that includes us all to inspire a healthy admission!
Before November leaves, ask yourself what can I achieve? History has proven strong, that the thoughts of one human being, can affect us all. Whether it is major or minor, give this month your best. Finish everyday with a positive affirmation, a self testament.
In November of 1990, I was seventeen, that month I gave in and allowed all negative things to tempt me. Because I fought temptation, I gave myself a chance. Now every November has become a positive remembrance.
