Soledad O'Brien Honored at Annual Brotherhood Crusade Pioneer of African American Achievement Award Dinner

By Ginger Campbell

CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O'Brien has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Brotherhood Crusade Pioneer of African American Achievement Award. The event will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, 9876 Wilshire Boulevard, in Beverly Hills at 7:00pm.

Since joining the network in 2003, O'Brien has reported breaking news from around the globe and has produced award-winning and record-breaking documentaries on the most important stories facing the world today. O'Brien's project, Black in America 2, was a four-hour documentary focusing on successful community leaders who are improving the lives of African-Americans. O'Brien's reporting for Black in America in 2008 revealed the state of Black America 40 years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She has also reported for the CNN documentary Words That Changed a Nation, featuring a never-before-seen look at Dr. King's private writings and notes, and investigated his assassination in Eyewitness to Murder: The King Assassination. Her Children of the Storm project and One Crime at a Time documentary demonstrate O'Brien's continued commitment to covering stories out of New Orleans.

Ms. O'Brien was also part of the coverage teams that earned CNN a George Foster Peabody award for its Katrina coverage and an Alfred I. Dupont Award for its coverage of the tsunami. Her numerous other awards include a Gracie Allen Award in 2007 for her reporting from Cyprus on the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict as well as her reports from the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. The NAACP honored her with its President's Award in 2007 for her humanitarian efforts and journalistic excellence. In 2008, she was the first recipient of the Soledad O'Brien Freedom's Voice Award from the Morehouse School of Medicine for being a catalyst for social change. Also in 2008, O'Brien was the first recipient of The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Goodermote Humanitarian Award for her efforts while reporting on the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina and the Southeast Asia tsunami and her latest project Latino In America premieres October 21st and 22nd on CNN.

"We are so honored to celebrate the work of Soledad O'Brien at our annual dinner," says Charisse Bremond Weaver, president and CEO of the Brotherhood Crusade. "Her unique ability to relate the human experience, and specifically the African American experience, to the world has positioned her as a leader and humanitarian. Too often, the images of African Americans are portrayed in a less than positive light. Visionary journalists like Soledad O'Brien challenge negative perceptions and reset the bar to highlight the contributions of African Americans."

Some of the past recipients of the Pioneer of African American Achievement Award include Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Stevie Wonder, Berry Gordy, Cathy Hughes, Sandra Evers-Manley, Spike Lee, Rosa Parks, Don King, Tavis Smiley, Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Muhammad Ali.

Continues Bremond Weaver, "The Brotherhood Crusade has been a cornerstone in the Los Angeles community for over 40 years. Each year we endeavor to build upon past successes to create programs that meet the needs of those we serve. For example, we have highly successful programs that uplift youth though lifestyle training--gang prevention, after school programs that accentuate academic, cultural and fine arts enrichment, as well as sports camps that not only develop and refine athletic abilities, but also assist with overall health through nutrition and diet education. Our financial literacy programs teach young and old alike, personal, community and business fiscal responsibility and the maintenance of a positive attitude regarding money that will influence them throughout their lives. We host health screenings that include medical, dental, eye and breast exams that over 5,000 individuals attend annually-- and who otherwise would have limited to no access to these vital services. Our theme for this year's dinner is 'Sowing Seeds of Change by Building Community,' which reinforces our commitment to assist individuals and groups in our community who need it most. I am so grateful for all of our partnerships that continue to allow us to be a viable and valuable resource."

Musical legend Eddie Levert will serve as the evening's entertainment. Known as the lead singer for R&B sensation group The O'Jays, Eddie Levert is the "voice" that resonated with millions of fans and resulted in several multiplatinum hits for the legendary Philadelphia soul group.

NBC4 (KNBC-TV) news anchor Chris Schauble will serve as the evening's Master of Ceremonies.
