A Split Decision In BTRC/BASN Polls

Coaches tab FAMU No. 1; S.C. State gets media's nod

NEW HAVEN, Ct. (BASN) -- So who's the No. 1 team in black college football??

It all depends on who you ask.

Many agree that conference foes Florida A&M (4-0, 2-0 MEAC) and South Carolina State (3-1, 1-0 MEAC) -- who'll meet each other later this month in Orangeburg -- are the top two teams currently in the sport.

Where they differ in opinion is which one is truly No. 1. For the first time in three weeks, the BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU FCS Coaches and Media Polls have a different team sitting in the top spot.

On the coaches side, the Rattlers received 11 first-place votes to snare the top spot from the Bulldogs, who received five first-place nods. In the media's top 10, SCSU got eight first-place votes as opposed to FAMU's six first-place nods, to remain atop this week's rankings.

In fact, only two points (143-141) separate Buddy Pough's squad from Joe Taylor's bunch in this week's media poll. While FAMU was idle this past Saturday, SCSU fell 38-14 to the University of South Carolina.

Both teams will be on the road this Saturday as they await their showdown at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium on October 15th. South Carolina State travels to Dick Price Stadium to meet Norfolk State (2-2).

Much like the Bulldogs did last week, Florida A&M will take on an FBS opponent from their home state. The Rattlers travel to Land Shark Stadium to take on the Hurricanes of Miami (3-1), ranked 11th nationally in both the AP and USA Today polls.

Both polls have Prairie View A&M (2-1) and Alabama A&M (4-1) coming in at three and four, respectively. The Panthers snapped a 21-game losing streak to Grambling State last weekend with a 35-32 win in the State Fair Classic at Dallas.

This Saturday, the Bulldogs will travel to Robinson Stadium to meet the Tigers (2-3) in a key SWAC battle. Prairie View visits Montgomery to battle the Hornets of Alabama State (3-1) at Cramton Bowl.

The rest of the coaches poll shows Morgan State (3-1) at five, Southern (3-2) is sixth, Grambling State falls from four to seven, Norfolk State sits at eight, while Alabama State and Hampton (2-2) are tied at ninth.

As for the media poll, Albany State (5-0) is fifth, Grambling State is sixth, Shaw (5-1) moves up to seven, Southern drops to eighth, Morgan State is ninth, and Bowie State (4-2) debuts this week at No. 10.

Among some of the other key games this weekend are Shaw at Fayetteville State in the CIAA, Morgan State hosting North Carolina A&T in the MEAC, and Albany State at Miles in the SIAC.
