SUMMER FUN AT CAMP WESSON

Summer fun and a vacation for approximately 80 at-risk African American and Latino kids from South Los Angeles and Mid-City was made possible recently by Councilmember Herb Wesson in Griffith Park. The park was transformed into "Camp Wesson," where the kids were able to join in an array of recreational activities unavailable to most at-risk kids, such as archery, wall-climbing, swimming and hiking.

The 3-day and 2-night adventure was part of the gang intervention initiative of Councilmember Herb Wesson and Project SAVE

"This was a totally new experience for these kids," said Wesson.

"The were able to get out of their day-to-day environment and into the fresh air where they made new friends and learned to relate to others from different races and backgrounds."

This event follows the success of the camping and deep-sea fishing trip that Councilmember Wesson and Project SAVE sponsored in 2007 for boys and girls from Baldwin Village. That event involved camping over-night at Jim Gilliam Park and boarding a sport-fishing boat the next day for an all-day fishing trip on the ocean.

Last year Project SAVE partnered with the city's Department of Recreation and Parks in expanding the range of experiences with a larger group of kids, approximately 100.

Funded by the City of Los Angeles, Project SAVE was founded by Councilmember Wesson and receives administrative support from Community Build, Inc. In addition to their work with at-risk kids, Project SAVE has sponsored the "Late-Night Hoops" basketball league, a flag-football league and a co-ed softball league.

Beyond organized recreational activities, Project SAVE also offers "safe passage" programs at Dorsey and Hamilton High Schools, and Cienega and Hillcrest Elementary Schools; job training through "P.V. Jobs;" and conflict resolution and anger management counseling.
