Wesson provides needed funds for Dorsey football jerseys

Dons will play on new state of the art artificial turf

With the high school football season at hand, and the Dorsey High School football team in need of football jerseys, Councilmember Herb Wesson has stepped up to provide $7,000 toward new jerseys for the team.

Councilmember Wesson got involved when the parents of the Dorsey players, along with Coach Paul Knox and Strength Coach Martin Ludlow alerted him to the fact that without financial help the team wouldn't have the 65 jerseys they needed to start the season.

"The Dorsey Dons are an important part of our community," said Wesson. "Our students have worked hard to prepare for this season and they deserve our support. I'm pleased that I could lend a helping hand."

Councilmember Wesson has also pulled together the $2 million needed for the newly installed state of the art artificial turf and running track for the Jackie Robinson Stadium at Rancho Cienega Sports Complex where the Dorsey Dons play their home games. The football field and track were in very poor condition and needed renovation. Wesson made it a priority to upgrade the stadium when he assumed office.

"Jackie Robinson Stadium is a great asset to the residents of our community, and it makes sense to invest in this important asset," said Wesson.

Wesson plans to hold the reopening ceremony of the Jackie Robinson Stadium on September 18, 2009, when the Dorsey Dons play their first home game against Hamilton High School.
