The 'Michael Vick Community Celebration' is really happening

Sentinel Wire Services

I don't know what happens at a "Michael Vick Community Celebration." I think it's just a bunch of people standing around, looking over their shoulder for Roger Goodell, and if they think they see him, they put their hands in the air and scream, "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!"

I could be wrong about that, though. According to an AP report at PilotOnline.com, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is sponsoring Michael Vick Day, and it sounds like a hoot.

[SCLC chapter president Andrew Shannon] said he expects anywhere from 500 to 1,000 people to attend the family oriented event, which will feature face painting, pony rides, music and other festivities. Retailer DTLR was also among the organizers.

"It was his idea," John Eley, one of the organizers, told The Associated Press on Friday. "Vick wanted to give back to the community, like he always does."

Vick is expected to speak at the event and to spread the word of Martin Luther King Jr's message of non-violence.

Some of you, I'm certain, will find this idea ghastly. You won't be alone. The comments section from the above-linked article is almost entirely against the idea, most of them quite rabidly.

I'm not, though. What we're talking about here is fewer than 1,000 people having a little community event with face painting and pony rides, while they promote Dr. King's message of non-violence. That's what's going to be happening on that day. These people are essentially railing against pony rides and non-violence.

The city isn't paying for anything. They're lending some tables and tents, but the SCLC is sponsoring the event. If they want to have a Michael Vick Day, where's the harm?

There have been plenty of Anti-Michael Vick Days in the past, and as he attempts to get his career back on track, there will certainly be plenty of Anti-Michael Vick Days in the future. One afternoon of pony rides in support of Vick isn't going to hurt anyone.
