Chris Brown has posted a video to his website in which he pleads with fans to forgive him for the beating he handed former girlfriend Rihanna in February.
In the message, Brown says how sorry he is for the incident, and that he wanted to apologize earlier, but was unable to on the advice of his lawyer.
"Although I will do some interviews and answer some questions in the future, I felt it was time that you heard directly from me and that I am sorry," he says.
"I wish I had the chance to live those few moments again. But, unfortunately, I can't," he says, referring to the altercation that left Rihanna with bruises and contusions on her face.      Â
Sporting a red shirt, Brown says he can't go into the specifics of the assault, but wants everyone to know that there is no excuse for his actions.
"I take great pride in being able to exercise self control, and what I did is inexcusable," he says. "I am very sad and very ashamed at what I've done. My mother and my spiritual teachers have taught me way better than that."     Â
He also mentions Rihanna during the 2:03 minute apology. "I have told Rihanna countless times and I'm telling you today that I am truly, truly sorry, and that I wasn't able to handle the situation both differently and better," he says.
Additionally, Brown addressed his own childhood experience with abuse at the hands of his former stepfather Donnelle Hawkins, the man he claims was abusive and beat both him and his mother.
"As many of you know, I grew up in a home where there was domestic violence. And I saw first hand what uncontrolled rage can do. I have sought and I'm continuing to seek help to ensure that what occurred in February can never happen again.
Brown is forbidden from phoning, e-mailing or texting Rihanna, and can't come within 50 yards of her (10 yards at music industry events) until his Aug. 5 sentencing, when the judge will consider Rihanna's request for a less-restrictive order.
