Dr. Sharon Watson Fluker
Claremont School of Theology will award Dr. Sharon Watson Fluker an honorary doctorate for her accomplishments in mentoring and securing fellowships for theological doctoral students from diverse backgrounds.
On Monday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m., Bishop Charles Wesley Jordan, Dr. Monica A. Coleman, and Dr. Lincoln Galloway will host a reception for Dr. Fluker at Haddon Center in the Butler Building at Claremont School of Theology, 1325 North College Avenue in Claremont. The public is invited to attend.
"Dr. Fluker has had an exceptionally wide impact on theological education, especially for African Americans and other people of color in the religious academy," said Claremont President Jerry Campbell.
"We are honored and delighted that she is joining us so we can recognize and celebrate her work."
Dr. Fluker was Vice President of Doctoral Programs and Administration for the Fund for Theological Education (FTE) from 1998 through 2011. Under her leadership, FTE awarded more than 400 fellowships to doctoral students from diverse backgrounds.
Over the years, 79 percent of students receiving support from FTE Doctoral Fellowship Programs are professors in theological schools or universities and 21 percent now serve as leaders in church-related and nonprofit settings.
Dr. Fluker is currently Senior Advisor for the Salzburg Global Seminar-Mellon Fellows Community Initiative where she is developing strategies and concepts for a global education consortium of 40 historically Black and Appalachian colleges.
