Three El Camino College MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) students recently won prestigious NSF-MESA S-STEM Scholarships in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. The three scholarships total $33,500 and will be used to help pay for college expenses.

"Transfer Ready" scholarships, each for $10,500, went to: George Cendejas an electrical engineering major who will transfer to Cal Poly Pomona, and Alma Barrera, a civil engineering major who plans to transfer to USC.

In addition, a "Rising Sophomore" scholarship of $12,500 was awarded to Johanna Zamora, a civil engineering major who will transfer next year to UCLA or to the University of California at Berkeley.

"What better way to reward our students than to assist them with financial resources?" said Arturo Hernandez, El Camino College MESA director. "Alma, George and Johanna are committed students and they are now seeing the results of their hard work and dedication."

The University of California MESA Consortium administers this scholarship program funded by the National Science Foundation to support students with financial need and high academic achievement. Eligibility for the NSF-MESA S-STEM program is open to students from 30 MESA Community College programs in California.

The MESA Community College Program at El Camino College provides mathematics, engineering and science academic enrichment. The program promotes academic excellence that supports successful transfer to four-year institutions in mathematics-based majors.
