SUPERINTENDENT EXTENDS DEADLINE TO SAVE MORE TEACHERS

Because of the popularity of the early retirement program for veteran teachers, administrators and other certificated employees, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines announced today that he has extended the deadline for applications to Friday, May 8. The extension will allow more certificated employees to take advantage of the incentive, which is equal to 40% of the employee's annual salary and paid out incrementally over five years or longer.

"That would mean fewer certificated teachers and employees would be laid off," Cortines said, explaining that termination notices are scheduled to take effect July 1.

In anticipation of using federal stimulus funds, the superintendent is making plans to save non-permanent secondary teachers in chronic shortage areas, such as math and science. Cortines will continue to unveil his plans to save additional teaching jobs.

At the recommendation of the superintendent, precautionary termination notices were rescinded earlier this month for 1,996 permanent elementary school teachers.
