The APADS ladies stepped through the portals of the AKA Sorority House in their high heels and high fashion dresses. Accompanying them were the APADS gentlemen and their many guests.


What better way to celebrate Women's History Month than to honor two scholars who were former presidents of APADS. They are Dr. Evelyn Metoyer Williams retired educator and former principal of Early Education Center of the L.A. Unified School District and Dr. Karen Robinette Associate Professor of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at Cal State Northridge.


Dr. Carolyn Monroe, President of APADS gave a warm greeting to members and guests. She also presented beautiful, white, Cattleya orchids and a lovely bag of designer gifts to both Dr. Robinette and Dr. Metoyer Wiliams. These honorees were selected by the organization for their valuable contributions to APADS as former Presidents and their contributions in their field of work.


Dr. Karen Robinette, a recipient of many honors has taken her students on study tours to New York, Boston, Europe, China and Korea. Her department specializes in the business side of the apparel industry. She and her husband, Leonard, jazz aficionados have attended jazz festivals nationwide and overseas. She has personally taken tours to Asia, Europe and recently to South Africa.


Dr. Evelyn Metoyer-Williams is a consultant with the Jeffrey Foundation Inc. for children with special needs. She has also received many honors for her work with young children.


A longtime political activist, she's presently Region 4 vice Chair of the L.A. County Democratic Party. As a previous ambassador in the People to People program she studied the educational programs at the schools of England, Nagoya, Japan, Russia and the Czech Republic.


Dr. Ellen Griffin gave an exciting rendition of the poem titled "Phenomenal Woman," by Maya Angelou. She also discussed the history of Women's History Month. An inspirational message was given by Dr. Precious Fleming to the Associates (Doctoral students) in the audience.


She told about the personal challenges she overcame while pursuing her Doctoral degree. She urged them to complete the Doctoral program regardless of any set backs they might encounter.


Dr. Linda Petteway, graduate sponsor of the Associates (Doctoral students) urged the audience to attend the annual APADS Colloquium that's free to the public on April 19 at 2 p.m. at the A.K.A. Sorority House. Associates will present a synopsis of their dissertation for suggestion and comments from the audience.


The guests and members enjoyed refreshments; delicately made cupcakes by Kenya Robinson, a professional party planner. There were also a variety of sandwiches served on French rolls, tea and soft drinks.
