Words cannot express the thankfulness I felt in my heart to all of you who came out to The Sentinel on Friday March 13th to support our blood drive.
In conducting this blood drive 149 people attempted to give blood and we collected 101 units of blood. Of those 101 units, 35 where a CEK Negative match for our kids with Sickle Cell. There were another 31 that were EK Negative, which also matched our SCD kids. We had an amazing 66 out of 101 units match for the SCD kids.
While the Sentinel played an important role in making this blood drive possible it really was a community effort. I would be remised if I didn't give a special thank you to The Guy Black Show, Dominique DiPrima of the Front Page and all of the KJLH Family who opened up their airwaves to help promote this effort (Stevie your team represented, like you knew they would). Also, a special thank you to our very own Niele Anderson and The BEAT Team who dedicated an entire segment of Niele's community affairs program to educating our community about the tragedy of sickle cell anemia and the importance of giving blood.
To my Brothers, the Noble Men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. who stepped up and supported in a big way--each and every time I went out to the bus, there was another NUPE with his arm out giving til it hurt to help a child. And to my New Frontier Family Democratic Club and Southern Christian Leadership families who came out in support of this effort, you all truly demonstrated the message of our President, Barack Obama that service is the greatest form of patriotism you demonstrate.
And lastly to the members of 100 Black Women, The Brotherhood Crusade, Mothers In Action, all my friends on Facebook and every God-fearing community-caring person who came out and gave, and for all of you who tried to give but couldn't I want to say thank you. This is what our community talks about all the time, taking care of ourselves first and being the first to step up, because how can we ask others to do for us what we are not willing to do for ourselves.
For the record, I want you all to know that the blood that did not match will not go to waste. There are other very sick children enjoying the blessing of your bounty! They live today because you took action. I heard a wise man say that the definition of love is action. When you love, you do. And you did!
By the way for each of you who gave blood, and for those of you who didn't, this is an ongoing effort. The next time you can give blood is May 18, 2009 so reach out to Children's Hospital and sign up today. Those same kids with Sickle Cell are going to need help next month so we MUST sustain this effort
Let me know who else you think is ready to assume the leadership mantle within our community. Let me know if there are any other issues we need to address, or stories we need to tell. Let me know what is on your mind I really do want to hear from you, I want you to "Talk to Danny."
