The L.A. City Commission on the Status of Women will host their inaugural Women's Festival Saturday, March 7, at Jim Gilliam Park (4000 South La Brea Avenue Los Angeles). Themed, "Women of Resilience," the festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will feature "Everybody Hates Chris" actress Tichina Arnold, Nicki Micheaux of ABC Family's "Lincoln Heights," fitness guru and TV/radio personality Big Lez, Terra Menyone ("Notorious"), 2008 Miss California Latina Nancy Pelayo, and inspirational speaker Jewel Diamond Taylor. This year's celebration of women will focus exclusively on wellness of women and girls in the Los Angeles area. Events include a tennis clinic hosted by the Venus and Serena Williams Tennis Academy's Coach LeGeorge Mauldin featuring local journalist and activist Jasmyne Cannick, free health screenings, motivational talks, healthy cooking demonstrations, a clothing drive for women, fitness clinic, make-overs, financial literacy workshop, raffles, and a free lunch for all attendees. "In honor of Women's History Month, we wanted to host an event that was in the community and for the community," said Kellie Hawkins, executive director of the Commission on the Status of Women. "The Women's Festival gives us the opportunity to address the pressing and relevant needs of the women living in Baldwin Village and throughout the City of Los Angeles. During these tough economic times, the Commission has a responsibility not only as a policy advisor but also as a resource to women throughout the City and especially those in underserved communities to connect them to the essential and critical support services in the community from health and wellness to job training."
