Rotary Club of Crenshaw-Watts presented a check in the amount of $1,400 to Jordan High School girl's basketball Head Coach Jason Simons and his team. The donation to the program was for the team's community service efforts.
The club, formally known as Rotary Club of Watts-Willowbrooks, chartered in 1975, supported the team in its community service during the Annual Watts/Willowbrook Christmas Parade.
The Rotary Club conducts a number of local and international projects. Two ongoing projects are conducted in Lusaka, Zambia Africa. The club provides mosquito nets to guard children and families against malaria, and water well pumps and filters to provide safe and clean drinking water to villages.
While the local club celebrated its 34th anniversary last month, Rotary International will mark its 104th anniversary this month. Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.
The club's meetings are held each Friday afternoon at 12:15 p.m. at Sizzler Restaurant, located at 3701 Santa Rosalia Dr., which is in the southern part of the Crenshaw-Baldwin Hills Mall.
