The USC Trojans began 2009 just like they began 2008 with a victory in the Rose Bowl and became the first team to capture three consecutive 'Granddaddy of Them All' on New Years day.

So much this Penn State putting a scare into the Trojans and ending the Big 10 jinx against the Cardinal and Gold assault led by junior quarterback Mark Sanchez and a vaunted defense that made sure the game was over at halftime.

What made the Trojans 38-24 victory so impressive was that star running back Joe McKnight didn't play most of the game because of an injury and the defense did perform admirably in the second half.

If this was safety Taylor Mays, running back Stafon Johnson and quarterback Sanchez last game as a Trojan then it was one for the memories, but they any of those players return for next season coach Pete Carroll's outfit will be right back in the thick of a national title run again.

The Lakers must be the quietest 27-5 team in NBA history, and this after they drubbed the supposedly invincible Boston Celtics on Christmas day.

I love the attitude of this team, especially Lamar Odom who has not only accepted his role as a reserve, but is relishing in the theme of the overall team concept.

Odom, a five tool star, could easily be with any other team in the league and starting, but is beginning the sense the significance of be part of something as special as an NBA championship team.

Who would think that after sustaining key injuries to Jordan Farmar and Luke Walton who had resumed his position in the starting line-up that the Lakers would continue to play as impressive as they have.

Obviously one of the primary reasons is Kobe Bryant, the reigning MVP, who has become as efficient as ever and is quietly playing as if he wants to capture the coveted award again next year.

Nobody asked me, but you get the feeling with air of confidence the Lakers are playing with that this just might year the year they win it all.

Trevor Ariza has been fantastic in any capacity that he's been put in and continues to play hard and do the necessary little things that brings that bling-bling to your team.

As Odom has said it's too early to get caught up in how many games they've, but let them win that last game in June and we will celebrate.
