County Warns against Property Tax Scam

Los Angeles County residents were warned to be wary of private companies that offer to file property reassessment forms for a fee. Los Angeles County Assessor Rick Auerbach said his office has received about 500,000 requests from property owners seeking to have their values reassessed, a service that is provided free of charge.

"We are again receiving calls from homeowners who have been sent these deceptive mailers, many of which could be mistaken for government notices and mislead property owners into thinking they must pay at least $100 to apply for a review of their assessed value," Auerbach said.

Application forms can be found online at www.assessor.lacounty.gov and property owners can also call (800) 807-2111 for assistance. Last year, county officials determined 130,000 houses and condominiums decreased in value, resulting in $750 in tax savings for the average property owner.
