With a pending defamation law suit swirling against BALCO founder Victor Conte and sweeping rumors about his alleged split with his wife Jin Mosley bubbling beneath the surface, Pomona born 'Sugar' Shane Mosley is finding solace the only place he could. In a boxing gym.
For much of his life, the continuing chapters of Mosley have been like a fairy tale of sorts. Taught to fight by his father Jack Mosley, Mosley has used his fast fist to escape his humble backdrop and has lived a good life.
At 37 years of age, he lives modestly and owns outright everything that he has, including cars and homes. The father of five, including a teenage boxing son following in his footsteps he could conceivably walk away from the sport and live happily ever after.
However, to know the three-time world champion who chooses his words carefully and speaks quietly, you would have to be among his close inner circle.
He never signs a contract or anything else without allowing for his trusted lawyers to examine the document first, according to long time publicist Debbie Caplin.
So, without even contemplating there was no reason to ask questions about whether or not he used steroids before his second fight against Oscar de la Hoya, or about his suit against Conte, or for that matter about his wife Jin whom many in boxing circles have described as overbearing and demanding.
He gracefully replaced his father Jack as his trainer for the second time with Nasim Richardson of Bernard Hopkins camp for his upcoming bout against Antonio Margarito on Jan. 24 at Staples Center for the WBA welterweight championship of the world.
"He's a teaching type of trainer and has a plan for what he wants to do," Mosley said of Richardson.
Quite comfortable and at peace now that he is discussing something that he loves and has an unyielding passion for, Mosley took a break from his grueling training schedule to discuss his fight with Margarito.
"I'm ready to fight right now. I'm anxious to fight, " he said from his Big Bear.
He says that he's much sharper for this fight than he was for Ricardo Mayorga that ended with Mosley winning a stunning 12th round knockout in the final seconds of the final round.
"I wasn't sharp in the fight and he was bigger than I was," he vividly recalled.
That bout was contested at 154 pound and this fight will be fought at 147, a weight he feels much more comfortable at.
Critics have question if his skills are declining and doubt that he could beat Margarito, but Mosley has never lost to a Mexican fighter.
"He [Margarito] is right there to be hit. His styles is he comes right at me," he explained.
In comparing Margarito to Mayorga he added, "He's different because he's a hard worker. He's not that talented, but a lot of fighters don't have heart he has. But it's not always a good thing to have that much heart."
Styles usually make fights. Mosley lost to Miguel Cotto, but Margarito knocked out Cotto in the 11th round last June to capture the title.
"I can definitely box him all night if I wanted to, but I will give the fans a little something to nibble on."
After watching what his business partner Hopkins did to Kelly Pavlik, his age does not deter him on bit.
"I feel young. I feel good. I live for this, not for the excitement, but to be the best," Mosley elaborated.
Mosley managed to go down from the mountain at Big Bear to say Merry Christmas to his wife and children, but will remain immersed in training through the holidays including New Years day.
He considers boxing as a marriage that he been in for 29 years and calls the sport his first love.
He says of his father Jack that he like a big brother and he talk to him almost daily. Mosley would like to travel the world once his boxing career is done, but he's not here yet.
There's a fight in front of him and as far as 'Sugar' Shane Mosley is concerned everything that is behind him is exactly where it should be.
