Effective Jan. 1, 2009, the Los Angeles Sentinel will increase the price of its newspaper from 50 cents to 75 cents in a decision made by President and Executive Editor Danny J. Bakewell Jr.

"We are the last of many newspapers throughout the nation to raise our price, but it is paramount at this time because of the increase in printing cost and the decrease in advertising revenue," said Bakewell Jr.

The publication celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2008 and still maintained a newsstand price of just 50 cents, but a tumbling economy coupled with other rocketing cost required the price change.

"For 75 years we have been the benchmark by which all other Black newspapers are measured. We demand the highest quality and will continue to challenge ourselves to exceed even our own lofty standards. Our commitment is to bring the best to our readers," Bakewell Jr. stated.
