Nominations for the 51st Annual Grammy Awards were announced last Wednesday night by The Recording Academy in a star-studded concert. This years awards reflected one of the most diverse years of music ever with the Album Of The Year category having nominations from the rap, R&B, folk and rock genres.
This year's gospel nominations also reflected this diversity, in the gospel music field as well. Mary Mary led the nominations with 4 nominations for their latest cd "The Sound" and its lead off single "Get Up."
Cece Winans and Kirk Franklin each received 2 nominations for their respective projects. Dorinda Clark-Cole, The Blind Boys Of Alabama and Take 6 received one nomination each. Local mega choir West Angeles Church COGIC received one nomination for their gold-selling CD "No Limit." "I am proud that my church choir was nominated and I look forward to attending the ceremony," stated one member of the choir.
One of the biggest surprises of the nominations was that the biggest gospel song of 2008 "Never Would Have Made It" by Marvin Sapp was not nominated in the gospel category at all. ''I am very shocked that that song was not included. Because it was the biggest song of this year and I believe that the Grammy Academy totally disrespected the gospel field by not nominating this great song. What is wrong with them?'' stated Jerry Thompson, a gospel music insider.
Yet another surprise was "I Understand," from Randy Jackson's Music Club CD received one nomination in the Best Gospel song category." "It is a good song, but I believe that Smokie's version is way better,'' stated Thompson.
The 51rst Annual Grammy Awards will be handed out at the Staples Center on February 8,2009.
