CNS--USC was given the OK this month by the city of Los Angeles to start planning housing and retail complexes for students living in the University Park community. The Los Angeles City Council's vote to develop a "USC University Park Specific Plan" means the university can go ahead with plans to add living space for 5,000 students. USC officials expect to replace University Village, an aging shopping area located just to the north of campus on Jefferson Boulevard between McClintock Street and Hoover Boulevard, with housing, 250,000 square feet of retail space, a 150-room hotel and a 50,000-square-foot conference center.

USC officials said the plan should relieve pressure on surrounding residential neighborhoods, where rents have soared as more students make the decision to live near campus.

"This residential college has placed a burden on the community. Our students can very easily price out any resident and they have done that--we acknowledge that," said Brain League, a member of the USC Master Plan Advisory Committee.

An environmental impact report is expected to be issued some time next year.
