Millions of Americans across the country gathered to celebrate the efforts of the veterans who served our country in the armed forces. Five hundred of them gathered at Carson's Veterans Park for a Veterans Day celebration.

A number of veterans were on hand for the event, which was hosted by award-winning broadcast journalist Pat Harvey, who anchors Prime 9 News on KCAL 9.

"Some people have forgot about the sacrifices that many veterans have made," said Carson Councilman Harold Williams, who is also a veteran. "For us to pay tribute to them today is an indication that we do not want the sacrifices and the commitments that they made to have gone in vein."

Councilman Williams is very fond of his time in the military. The armed serves allowed him to pursue a bachelor's degree in engineering at Cal State Los Angeles and a masters degree at Cal State Long Beach, and the GI bill allowed him to purchase his first home.

"I'm grateful to America and my service to this country," Williams said.

Veterans such as Bruce Wheaton, who was in the air force, are grateful for the impact that the military has had on their lives. Wheaton goes as far as to say that the draft should be reinstated.

"Look at young America today, they do not have any guidance," Wheaton said. "Four years in the military will give them some type of direction. It would give them discipline. When you are 18 years old you think you know everything. But you really do not know anything."

Wheaton horizons opened up during his time in the military.

"It gave me an opportunity to travel to different countries, to learn different cultures, to learn to deal with life issues," Wheaton said. "I think that any person who has been in the military became a better person."

The Veterans Day celebration has been held in Carson since 1999. Five walls stand at the park with the names of veterans from Carson who served in the United States Armed Forces. Roughly 800 names appear on the walls.
