Bishop Carl W. Stewart

Bishop Carl W. Stewart passed away on Friday, March 30, at the age of 76.

He was the founder and pastor of Greater Emmanuel Temple in Lynwood and the Diocesan of the Hawaii District Council of the 46th Episcopal District of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc.

A public viewing and memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 10, at Greater Emmanuel Temple, 3740 East Imperial Highway in Lynwood. The viewing takes place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the service starts at 7 p.m.

The Homegoing Celebration Service will be held on Wednesday, April 11, at 10 a.m., at the City of Refuge where Bishop Noel Jones serves as pastor. City of Refuge is located at 14527 South San Pedro Street in Gardena. A final viewing, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., will precede the service.

Bishop Stewart led the Emmanuel Temple congregation for 47 years. During his tenure, he constructed a magnificent edifice as well as served as District Elder and Suffragan Bishop. In 1998, Bishop Stewart was appointed Diocesan of the State of Hawaii by the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World.

Also, he was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity by Aenon Bible College and a Doctorate in Bible Philosophy from Pentecostal Bible College.

A writer posted on the web that "what set Bishop Stewart apart from all other pastors was that he wasn't a modern pastor, in any sense of the word, but from the Apostolic Holiness ‘old school.'

"We treasured his traditional ‘old school' approach to the pastoral ministry. His time-tested methodology was distinctly his and we admired and supported him in his uniqueness and radical devotion and faith in God. Under his leadership, we, at Emmanuel Temple, thrived."

Bishop Stewart's wife, Janet, preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory, four children, Carla Greenwood, Carl W. Stewart III, Nisan Stewart, and Rapture Stewart; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
