On Saturday, July 19, Broadway Federal Bank, headquartered on Wilshire Boulevard, hosted an afternoon of eloquence and elegance featuring Jacqueline Avant—wife of legendary music executive, Clarence Avant—and her collection of Japanese lacquered boxes.

073108_Avant_HudsonMrs. Avant spoke on the history of the boxes in her collection, which date from the 17th to 19th centuries, and then guests were treated to an exhibition of selected pieces. Paul C. Hudson, Chairman and CEO stated, “Broadway Federal Bank was proud to showcase Jacquie Avant’s unique collection of Japanese lacquered boxes. For an Afri can American woman t o be one of the foremost collectors of Japanese Art is a testament to cross-cultural possibilities. Broadway Federal Bank embraces Mrs. Avant’s passion for the arts and her gift for understanding and exalting other cultures. She is an inspiration to all of us to follow our passions, whatever they may be.”

Mrs. Avant and her husband Clarence, along with their children Nicole and Alex, joined Mr. Hudson in welcoming guests from all walks of life. The Consul General of Japan, Junichi Ihara and his wife joined Hollis Goodell, head of Japanese Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as artists Samella Lewis, Bernie Casey, Artis Lane, Betye Saar and Phoebe Beasley. Other guests included Diahann Carroll, Hattie Winston, Harold Wheeler, Earl Billings, Tanya Hart, Debbie Ingram and Cathy Hughes.
