The annual BET awards at the Shrine Auditorium this week was one of the most positive experiences that I have ever had at an entrainment awards show.
Accompanied by my teenage daughter Taelor, I took in the star studded evening with much delight as I’m sure she did.
Tributes to legends such as Quincy Jones and one of my all-time favorites Al Green. P-Diddy encouraging everyone to get out and register and vote and the enthusiasm for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama made it all the more delightful.
There are times when you attend such shows that you have to cover your child’s ears and eyes, but I must admit that there was no need to do any of that at the BET Awards.
As a parent I am often concerned what influences my children and it was delightful to see that our Black stars in the entertainment world are becoming more sensitive to that, or perhaps it is such a historical moment for us with the presidential election coming this fall that we all feel a greater sense of responsibility.
I think that we owe it to our children to take time out and experience something with them instead of always dictating to them. We will find in many cases what they feel about certain subjects and quite often they already share the same morals that we do.
Obama was not at the BET Awards, but he may as well have, as he probably received more applause that any of the honorees.
Unlike the BET Awards the presidential election is not a popularity contest, the person who is elected is going to be responsible for governing our lives for the next four years and perhaps beyond.
That is why I am urging each of you to make sure that you register to vote, if for no other reason than to show your children how important the right to vote truly is.
Just like many of us, entertainers all have lives beyond the stages they perform on, and thus during their enormous opportunity that Obama has presented us with, they, like myself don’t want to blow it by not voting for him.
Sincerely, Danny J. Bakewell, Jr. President & Executive Editor www.lasentinel.net
