Franchise owner Gilbert Cox partners with Soul Food queen
She is tastefully known throughout Southern California as Chef Marilyn, but she is actually a Louisiana native who has brought her flavor to the Southland.
Gilbert Cox was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles and for the past 15 months has been franchise owner of Louisiana Fried Chicken located at 8600 Aviation Blvd. in Inglewood.
The fast food chicken establishment has become a popular location to eat spicy fried chicken and rice for thousands of locals and Chef Marilyn’s Soul Food Express on Crenshaw Blvd. serves an estimated 700 meals per day.
“I always thought that if I could just have Chef Marilyn’s side dishes to go along with my chicken than I would really have it poppin’,” said Cox.
Chef Marilyn who has become the favorite soul food cater to such stars as Stevie Wonder, Magic Johnson, Nancy Wilson, Little Richard, Natalie Cole and the late Johnny Cochran just to name a few, is a brand name associated with the best soul food in Los Angeles.
“I’ve always been open to the idea of expanding and doing business with other African American business, so I had no problem with partnering with Gilbert on this venture,” Chef Marilyn said.
So, for the first time and at only Cox location Chef Marilyn’s Soul Food will be exclusively available at Louisiana Fried Chicken.
“It’s a win-win situation for the customers and for me,” admitted Cox.
In addition to the bevy of other items available such as fish and chicken. Customers can also purchase Chef Marilyn’s yams, collard greens. Macaroni and cheese and red beans and rice.
“I can tell you that the sides must be replenished quite often,” added Cox. “There are side dishes and then there is Chef Marilyn’s that the big difference.”
Cox is planning for a grand opening at his Louisiana Fried Chicken location for June 21 just as the summer officially begins, but with Chef Marilyn’s on the entrée the season will always be just right.
