The Los Angeles Sentinel celebrated Barack Obama, as he became the first African American Democratic nominee for president of the United States.

“This is a historic week in our history,” said KJLH’s Guy Black, who hosted the event. “People don’t understand that we will never forget this day when a Black man was nominated as the Democratic nominee for the biggest job in the world.”

There was a lot of excitement from members of the community. People of all ages attended to be a part of history.

“We’re here to celebrate the nomination of Barack Obama, but more importantly we’re here to get him into office, said Niele Anderson, who is the former national coordinator of Rock the Vote.

Some of the delegates were on hand to speak to the crowd.

“This is the day that Rosa Parks would be proud of, that’s why she gave up her seat on the bus,” said Robert Cole, Chair of African Americans for Obama, and a delegate. “Dr, King marched for this day.”

“We can be proud to say that Obama is one of our brick carriers,” said Lillian Mobley, community activist. “He’s working for us. But he can’t do the things that he wants to do if we do not do the things that we should do. That means that we have to vote.”

“I’m supporting Barack Obama for the children,” said Willis Edwards, Board member of the NAACP. “I’ve never seen so many children so excited in my life, knowing that they can what ever they want to be when they grow up. Obama has an understanding of what our needs are.”

Speakers repeatedly told the crowd that it is very important to vote. It is so important that people were able to register to vote at the rally. It does not matter how much we cheer, or how excited the Black community is, if we do not go out and vote, this dream may not happen.
