FOLLOW US:

We have seen a day that most of us never thought we would see—the day that a Black man would be elected the Presumptive Nominee of the Democratic Party (He will be the presumptive nominee until he is ratified at the convention in Denver this August).

As I celebrate this monumental moment, I must stay focused and remind myself and all of you, that we are just at halftime. While being the Democratic Nominee is an incredible feat, we still have a lot further to go. Our goal is for President Barack Obama—not only to be Presidential Candidate Barack Obama. John McCain and the Republican Party is the real enemy in this fight. As we discussed at the delegate training in Sacramento a few weeks ago, UNITY must be the theme. We need Clinton Democrats to support Obama, we need their votes, we need their money and we need their support.

I remind you all that John Kerry was the Democratic Nominee, but we have been forced to endure 4 more years of George W. Bush and his administration. Al Gore was the Democratic Nominee and even won the popular vote, but he lost the electoral college and we ended up with old George W.

This race is hardly over. Electing an African American man as the President of The United States is not going to be an easy task, it is going to be a true test of America’s progressiveness. The question is, is America truly ready to put their lives in the hands of a Black man. I want to believe yes, but we will really only know in November. We must stay vigilante in order to see this day become a reality.

I say this to remind you all that we still have much work to do. We have to keep registering people to vote. We must keep raising money to assist in winning the swing states, we have to keep people involved, and we have to work to insure that CHANGE really happens.

If we don’t, we will have a very symbolic victory. But real victory only comes in November. Let’s not forget the prize—PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA! I also want to invite you all to come out to an “Obama for President” rally in front of the Los Angeles Sentinel this Friday at 3:00 pm. Lets get together and lets celebrate this momentous occasion, before we get back to the work of electing Barack Obama President of the United States.

Let me know who else you think is ready to assume the leadership mantle within our community. Let me know if there are any other issues we need to address or stories we need to tell. Let me know what is on your mind. I really do want to hear from you; I want you to “Talk to Danny.”

Sincerely,
Danny J. Bakewell, Jr.
