Free Introduction Presentation Monday, March 17
Parents facing tensions and conflicts with their teens, can learn how to effectively communicate with their child to gain cooperation, become closer, and heal their families, in a free introductory workshop; “Parents and Teenagers Changing Attitude, Changing Outcomes,” Monday, March 17, 10 a.m. This presentation is sponsored by the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Special Education Division, and will be held at the Parent Community Services Branch, 701 W. Cesar Chavez Blvd., Los Angeles, 90012. For more information call: Leonard Studley (323) 932-2155.
“So many of our African American children are unnecessarily labeled special needs and placed in special needs classes because no one wants to deal with their behaviors,” says Walter Jackson, Msc.D., who will facilitate the workshop. “Many teachers and parents are scratching their heads trying to figure out how to communicate with these teens who are going through a difficult and painful growing period in their lives. Some of the youths are frustrated with adults too, especially at school, so they drop out and often join gangs.”
Jackson, author of the upcoming book for young adults, “Sporting the Right Attitude: Lessons Learned in a Troubled Family,” facilitates workshops with his wife, Janet Alston Jackson, author of “ A Cry for Light,” winner of the USA Book News Award for Christian Inspiration. Since 1993, the couple have trained thousands to communicate with awareness and heart, which is their company motto.
The Jacksons who train teachers, are now focusing on helping parents to understand and communicate with their teens through the Sporting the Right Attitude™ Program, a division of their company, Self Awareness Trainings, LLC. They are passionate about helping teens stay in school. According to the Committee on Education and Labor, and the Children’s Defense Fund, the nation is seeing record high drop out rates and it’s becoming a national epidemic. Only about 70 percent of students graduate from high school with a regular high school diploma. Many of these children are African-American.
“The biggest mistake parents make, is they think their child should think a certain way,” says Walter, “But once they take the workshop, they instantly see why they have conflicts not only with their child, but in their personal and professional relationships. That’s huge, because once you are aware of a why you have a breakdown in communication with others, the healing automatically begins.”
Another component of the Jackson’s trainings is Mindfulness, how to live in the moment, which not only helps reduce and eliminate stress, but helps reduce conflicts, and bring relationships closer together through compassion and understanding. Janet’s book, “A Cry for Light,” is her memoir of how their adopted son with emotional problems tore their family apart, and how Mindfulness, living in the now, and using the behavioral styles information, helped heal the family. The couple have three children.
The Jacksons, who have been married 27 years, are also launching Sporting the Right Attitude(tm) in Love Relationships. “When you understand and are aware of your mate’s behavioral style, and your own, you can relate with fewer conflicts, and from the heart,” .says Janet. “This workshop will helps people see themselves through other people’s eyes, and that understanding can strengthen their relationship to stay together. We’re also excited because parents who take the workshop will be an example for their children who will grow up learning how to respect, and interact with the opposite sex.
