CNS - Marking the 52nd anniversary of Rosa Parks’ refusal to move from her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Ala., the Los Angeles City Council designated Dec. 1 as “Rosa Parks Human Rights Day.”

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a similar motion Nov. 27. The council also asked the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to consider an appropriate tribute to Parks every Dec. 1 and will urged the Los Angeles Unified School District to name a school in her honor.

“The family is very ecstatic about this resolution and of course want you to move forward with this,” said Parks’ cousin Thomas Williamson. “We can’t thank you enough.”

The resolution was introduced by Council members Bernard Parks, Jan Perry and Herb Wesson.

“I can recall in the ‘50s when this occurred and certainly it was not as dramatic at my age, at that time,” Bernard Parks said.

“To see that it made the impact in which people have a right in this country, in democracy, to sit where you should, go to a lunch counter, to go to any place you choose to ... as you get older your realize it was a significant feat.”

The proposal has been endorsed by civil rights leader the Rev. Al Sharpton.
