Local boy Shane Mosley hopes to confirm his greatness
The fighting pride of Pomona, “Sugar” Shane Mosley, will finally be in a fight that will either confirm or continue his legacy as one of the best boxers of this generation when he faces undefeated Miguel Cotto Saturday Nov. 10 at Madison Square Garden on HBO Pay Per View.
Already assured of being inducted into boxing’s illustrious Hall of Fame and the only fighter to beat Oscar De La Hoya twice, Mosley will dig deep one more time into his arsenal to find out if he has what it takes to beat a younger and perhaps stronger fighter.
Back in his corner is the man who made him what he has become, his father Jack Mosley, but now 36 years old and married with five children, the question that always faces a fighter in the sweet science is will father time catch up with him now?
Mosley emerged from the obscure shadows of Forum Boxing to mushroom into a boxing superstar with skills that reminded many of Ray Leonard and perhaps his namesake Sugar Ray Robinson.
It was his father who invented “power boxing,” a style that combines the essence of speed with effective punching that help Shane win 44 fights against just four defeats.
A likeable guy with a glowing smile and good looks many anticipated, it would be Mosley to rise to the stature that is now occupied by De La Hoya, but his father has been partly to blame for that.
It was his father who would not pull the trigger on a promotional deal with Don King while King had a red hot Mike Tyson. Instead they signed with Cedric Kushner who failed to maneuver Shane through the ranks and catapult him into mega paydays.
Now, daddy Jack isn’t calling such shots, it has been Shane’s Asian wife Jen who was instrumental in the deal that landed Mosley a partnership in the promotional giant Golden Boy Promotions company.
She also serves as his manager and the fact that few people in boxing care for her means that she’s doing everything right for her husband and has earned their respect.
Aside from raising a child of her own from a previously relationship and one of Shane’s from a previously relationship, they have three of their own, and she’s the backbone of all of them.
Thus, the only agenda in the Mosley household lately is beating Cotto and reestablishing Shane in the fight game as a Pay Per View player.
Clearly, Mosley has fought bigger and more talented fighters than Cotto and while Cotto has been carefully handled by Bob Arum, the man responsible for De La Hoya’s success, this is by far the most dangerous opponent he’s faced.
DeMarcus Corley, who was soundly defeated by Zab Judah, has put Cotto on his back. This was a Judah before “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather. Don’t underestimate the damage of a father after they’ve been in the ring with Mayweather.
Just off the two Fernando Vargas victories along Mosley should stop Cotto, but it is not likely that he will be able to win a decision in New York if the fight goes the distance.
One thing we will discover for sure “Is Sugar Still Sweet?”
