In an effort to highlight the importance of a healthy diet during National School Lunch Week, Assemblymember Curren Price (D-Inglewood) ate school lunch with children at Washington Elementary School and Hawthorne Middle School. “Childhood obesity is a growing health crisis,” said Price. “As a community we must be more proactive about ensuring that our children are eating nutritiously and exercising regularly.”

In cooperation with the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and Anna Appoian, Nutrition and Food Services Director for the Hawthorne School District, Assemblymember Price and other elected officials were invited to gain first-hand knowledge of the Hawthorne School District’s menu planning system and share a meal with students. 6700 lunches are served to students in the Hawthorne School District every day and vending machines have been replaced with produce bars in each school. The meals have a total fat content below 30%, with saturated fat below 10%, per week and meet the caloric and nutritional requirements established by The National School Lunch Act.

“I want to ensure that all of the schools within the 51st Assembly District are able to provide students with the healthiest options,” said Assemblymember Price. “Our futures depend on it.”

Assemblymember Curren Price serves the 51st Assembly District, which includes Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, Playa Vista, Westchester, Lawndale, West Athens, Lennox, Alondra Park, West Compton, Del Aire, and Willowbrook, as well as portions of the unincorporated area of Ladera.
