FOLLOW US:

The summer is almost over. Labor Day has come and depending on what day it is that you are reading the Sentinel, it may be gone (get a subscription and you will always have your paper before the weekend comes). My oldest daughter has started her freshman year of high school and my other three children will be back to school in a few more days as well.

I hope you have all enjoyed the summer, I certainly have. I have traveled to Africa with the Sentinel, vacationed in the Bahama’s with my family and racked up a whole lot of frequent flyer miles traveling back and forth to and from New Orleans trying to get our new radio station staffed and up and running.

We are now entering into the last 1/3 of the year and I want to encourage you all to focus. I know I need to, lets all assess our goals, look at where we are in our life and determine how we finish this year off with a bang. Maybe, you have been meaning to join an organization like SCLC or the NAACP to fight a little harder for our community. Maybe, you’ve wanted to support a campaign like “The Poor Peoples Campaign” in support of labor and living wages for everyone, or maybe you want to get involved in with Mothers In Action and The Brotherhood Crusade to help provide services for the needy during the holidays (You know the holidays are coming and Mothers in Action probably provides more meals, and adopts more kids during the holidays than any other organization of its kind).

Well, whatever it is you have been planning to do, “Do It Now”! Don’t wait until 2008 and make this your New Years Resolution, make it your Labor Day resolution and make it now. October, will be upon us before you know, and once November gets here we will kick into to the Black Social Season (kicked off by the Kappa Black and White Ball, which I have volunteered to chair along with my co-chair Reggie Jones Sawyer— and then moving into debutante balls, office parties and holiday festivities.

So if you are going to make a difference, now is the time to get involved. Get reinvigorated and get more committed to getting involved in our community, this is the only way we are going to make our community a better place is for each one of us to get involved.

I will let you know, what things I have re-committed myself too, let me know what things you have committed yourself too.

So, whether you agree or disagree, now more than ever I really need your input. I need to hear from you. I need to know what is going on in our community. I also need to know what other stories we need to tell, and what is on your mind. I really do want to hear from you, I want you to “Talk to Danny.”

Sincerely,
Danny J. Bakewell, Jr.
