As summer segues into fall, the City of Compton, along with KJLH 102.3 FM and the Los Angeles Sentinel is presenting its Gospel 2007 Concert, taking place September 8 at the Compton Par 3 Golf Course. Gospel music fans can look forward to artists like Dorinda Clark Cole, The Starlights, J. Moss and the Williams Brothers from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. KJLH’s Aundre Russell will emcee.
“This is the concert’s second year,” said Compton Mayor Eric Perrodin.

“It’s the first step in changing our image and bringing together a wholesome atmosphere... the ‘city on the hill.’”

A slew of negative press in the last ten or more years has shaped a public opinion where Compton is seen mostly as uninhabitable—even “unvisitable”, except for the poor and destitute.

“[People] think it’s not safe,” Perrodin told the Sentinel.

But, he said, the success of three concerts, most recently the Summer Soul Jam, is gradually changing that view.

The day’s event will also include a variety of food vendors and jumpers for the little ones to enjoy.

About some of the artists

As one third of the writing and production team PAJAM, J, J. Moss has quietly become one of the most powerful forces in modern gospel and soul music. Combining spiritual messages with modern arrangements and hip hop beats, PAJAM’s groundbreaking work with Trin-i-tee 5:7, Hezekiah Walker, Michelle Williams and others has helped him bring an accessible style of Gospel music to general urban audiences. Contributions to secular artists like Patti LaBelle, Dru Hill and Boyz II Men have made PAJAM one of modern music’s most sought after production teams.

However, hidden behind Moss’ writing abilities is what industry execs are calling a “formidable gospel vocalist.”

Meanwhile Dorinda Clark Cole of staple Gospel group The Clark Sisters, began singing at an early age along with her sisters in their father’s church in the early 70s. She broke out on her own in 2002, winning two Stellar Awards for her self-titled album.

Par 3 Golf Course is located at 6400 E. Compton Blvd. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.
