100 Black Men of Los Angeles Inc. recently announced the election of bestselling author and award-winning columnist Dr. Anthony Asadullah Samad who will succeed outgoing president, Dr. Louis J. Murdock.

The Los Angeles chapter of the 100 Black Men of America Inc. is the second oldest chapter of the national organization’s 106 chapters nationwide. With multiple community-based programs, its primary focus, the Young Black Scholars (YBS) Program, has been nationally recognized as one of the leading educational programs for college preparation in the nation.

YBS has sent over 18,000 students to America’s colleges, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UCLA and USC. The organization has also been lauded for its annual health and wellness activities that include prostate screening, hypertension and cancer awareness workshops.

With slightly over 100 local members comprised of civic and professional leaders from all walks of life, a veritable who’s who of Black males in Los Angeles, its past leadership roster includes an impressive group of distinguished individuals including City of Inglewood Mayor Roosevelt Dorn, noted dentist Dr. James T. Black, former King/Drew chief surgeon Dr. Ed Savage, developer and former Airport Commissioner Dr. Warren Valdry, and Los Angeles businessman Fred A. Calloway.

“The members were impressed with Dr. Samad’s 30-year community service record and his strategic planning experience, essentially overwhelmingly electing him in a virtual mandate. The 100 in Los Angeles are ready to bring in a new generation of professional men and have entrusted Anthony to take us to that next level,” former president Fred Calloway said.

Samad is an associate professor of Political Science at East Los Angeles College and managing director and host of the popular Urban Issues Breakfast Forum of Greater Los Angeles. His weekly feature commentaries appear nationwide in such periodicals as the Los Angeles Sentinel, the Chicago Defender, the Florida Courier and The Final Call. He is also a featured columnist on the nation’s most popular Black cyber-site, Blackcommentator.com and heartily accepts his new assignment with 100 Black Men.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity of leading such a distinguished group of real men who give real time and money to making a difference in their communities,” Samad noted. “We don’t want to just save some of our youth. We want to save them all, and ‘the 100’ can play a big role.”
