AGREEMENT REACHED BETWEEN LAUSD AND UTLA CALLING FOR TEACHERS TO TAKE 10 UNPAID DAYS

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has concluded an agreement with United Teachers Los Angeles that requires teachers to take 10 days off in 2012-13, Superintendent John Deasy announced today.

The agreement, which still must be ratified by the LAUSD Board of Education and the teachers’ union, calls for a reduction of five instructional days, in addition to teacher’s taking one unpaid pupil-free day and four other non-paid days.

“We are grateful to our labor partners for making this sacrifice on behalf of our youth,” said Deasy. “This agreement will enable many of our valued employees to remain in the classroom next year.”

The Superintendent noted that if Governor Brown’s initiative is approved by voters in November, some of the funds may be used to eliminate furlough days and enable students to experience a full academic calendar year.

“The difficult conditions of the agreement, which are the result of the continued pathetic level of funding of public education in California, makes it all the more important that voters approve the governor’s measure,” said Deasy.

The Superintendent added, “I want to thank our labor partners for the sacrifices they are making to help LAUSD save jobs and educational programs.”
