Southern Preacher Follows Tradition of Episcopal Father

There has been a breath of fresh air flowing through Grant A.M.E. Church in Long Beach since November 2011 when the Rev. Taurus L. Myhand was appointed as the senior pastor. The Rev. Myhand’s appointment has sparked new excitement by electrifying the congregation with his unique southern style of preaching.

He has followed the tradition of his Episcopal Father, Bishop Theodore Larry Kirkland, who is well known throughout the world by the affectionate title, ‘The Downhome Preacher with the Uptown Message,’ which was received while serving as pastor of Brookins Community A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles.

Bishop Kirkland appointed the Rev. Myhand to the congregation at the 2011 Fifth Episcopal District Planning Meeting in Los Angeles. Reverend Myhand has led Grant Church from having a mortgage, numerous debts, and lawsuits to being completely debt free in less than five months under his pastoral leadership.

The Rev. Myhand is a native of Brundidge, Alabama, and has served seven pastoral charges in Alabama, Missouri, and California. His most recent assignment was at the historic Wayman A.M.E. Church in Saint Louis, Missouri.

He is a graduate of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, with a Master of Divinity degree and Troy University in Troy, Alabama, with a Master of Science in criminal justice. At the 49th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Nashville, Tennessee, he was elected as a member of the General Board of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

He has a wonderful wife, Denise, who is also a criminal justice graduate of Troy University, and beautiful daughters Britney, Blair, Camille, and Chloe.
