Los Angeles Universal Preschool Partners With JetBlue Airways and PBS KIDS to Promote Early Literacy Among Children

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Universal Preschool (LAUP), JetBlue Airways and PBS KIDS are joining hands to bring books to children in need with the goal of strengthening early childhood literacy skills.

Until Aug. 31, LAUP will receive a donation of one book for every person in the Los Angeles area who registers on www.SoarWithReading.com by entering their name, zip code and a favorite children’s book title. As the only California organization selected for this grant program, and one of only seven non-profits chosen in the country, LAUP could potentially receive up to $40,000 in donated books. The books  will be distributed to children in LAUP’s network of more than 320 preschools throughout Los Angeles County.

“Our partnership with JetBlue and PBS KIDS will enhance early literacy efforts in Los Angeles County, and with the public’s help, many young readers will soon open the pages of a new book and may discover a story that will become their favorite for years to come,” says Celia C. Ayala, LAUP CEO.

According to a recent survey published in the Handbook of Early Literacy Research, there is a critical shortage of books available to children in need. It is estimated that only one age-appropriate book is available for every 300 children living in underserved communities in the U.S, which is less than 1 percent of the number of books available to children in middle-income neighborhoods.

In addition to being able to make a donation, families will receive free early literacy resources, interactive reading lists and expert advice on how to enrich learning and encourage children to read by visiting the www.SoarWithReading.com website.

“I know this initiative will be a great success and will make a difference in many children’s lives,” Ayala says.
