Trinidadian rapper/singer turned pop Princess: NICKI MINAJ is solidifying herself as a major fashion icon, she recently signed as the spokeswoman for Adidas, shooting their Fall campaign commercial in New York as major designers like Givenchy’s Ricardo Tisci, Donatella Versace and Oscar de la Renta clamor to dress her. She’s aligned herself with some big fashion players; sitting next to Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour at fashion shows and becoming a close friend with British designer Jeremy Scott did not hurt her rise in the fashion and beauty arena. There is talk about her launching a clothing line, and her work for MAC cosmetics did not go un-noticed.
With a new hit CD and accompanying video shot in Trinidad, the pop star is quite the businesswoman in marketing and branding herself. Currently headlining her `Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’ tour, Nicki is due to launch a fragrance in September. Nicki told style.com “I remember my first pair of Adidas shoes were very basic they were black and white. More recently I wore the Adidas wedges, I could walk in them for hours. I wore them on the set of the Madonna video. After that I contacted Adidas about it and now they are my favorite thing to wear on tour. You get the height, but with the comfort of a sneaker. That began a partnership with the iconic label.” Now, Nicki is the star of the Fall 2012 campaign under the theme ‘Adidas Is All In.’ She is part of the advertising campaign, along with other Brand Ambassadors, her friend, London based designer Jeremy Scott, singer Sky Fereira, hip-hop artiste Big Sean and pop star 2NEI among them.
The new Adidas commercial was partly shot in front of New York Esquina Restaurant. Nicki said as she got on the set for the late night shoot, she really did not know exactly what they were about to do. “The scene turned out to be me and Jeremy leaving the club and the street becomes like a runway for style. I love Jeremy and his designs, I walked into the trailer and put on the first thing I loved, the coat and sneakers and said `I’m ready to go’ and that was it.” Speaking of her pending fashion line, Nicki alluded to the fact that the line will be top notch and would not let anything go out to the masses that she wouldn’t wear herself. “The challenge is deciding what stores to place the line in. We have gotten interest from huge giants in the industry,” noted the pop star, who also said that she haven’t looked to any of her designer friends or contacts in the industry for advise as yet. “I am pretty sure I’ll chat with Donatella Versace and Jeremy Scott to get their words of wisdom, basically I know what my fans want when it comes to dressing. I gauge that based on their tweets from my videos and pictures. I’m sure we will do really well with it and go from there. I’m just following my heart, really.”
