Olivia Hutchinson Marks 106th Year

Reaching the century mark is a reason to rejoice, but Mrs. Olivia Hutchinson celebrated even more as she marked her 106th birthdays on August 25.

Mrs. Hutchinson, a longtime Leimert Park resident, was born in Hernando, Mississippi, and then moved to Memphis as a youngster.  In 1943, she married the late Claude Hutchinson and relocated to Los Angeles.

“They had an active life enjoying traveling, entertaining, and attending social events,” recalled her goddaughter, Lydia Thomas.

“Miss Olivia worked at Warner Brothers Studio during the heyday of movie-making.  She started out in housekeeping, moved up to First Aid, and then on to wardrobe.  And she still remembers who was naughty and who was nice,” said Thomas with a smile. 

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Mrs. Hutchinson loves baseball and football and enjoyed the recent Olympics.  Friends share that when she turned 100, she received commendations from the President, Mayor, and many elected officials.  However, it was the congratulatory letter from the LA Dodgers that she treasured the most.

According to Mrs. Hutchinson, “I have been blessed by my faith in God and being of service to others.  I love my spiritual family at Zion Hill Baptist Church.”
