James Reede III, currently a freshman at Jackson State University, has been selected by the African-American Golfers Hall of Fame as the 2012 Youth Golfer of the Year.  He will be inducted into the African-American Collegiate & Youth Golfers Hall of Fame on May 27, 2013.

Reede has a golf scholarship and majoring in business and engineering.  He is a 2012 graduate of Monterey Trail HS in Elk Grove, CA, where he was the Varsity Men’s Golf Team Captain and MVP for four years, and Student Assistant Coach for the Women’s Team for two years.  In August 2011, he won the Western States Golf Association Junior Championship, became an Automatic Qualifier and played in the 2012 Junior PGA Championship this past August. He also played in the 2012 Bill Dickey Invitational Tournament.

Reede started golf at age four prior to joining the Northern California Minority Junior Golf Scholarship Assoc. at age six.  He volunteered the past five years as an assistant golf instructor working with inner-city youth and has over 427 hours of service.  He participated in the Kappa Golf Association’s Junior Golf Guide Right Program for the first two years of the program.

Reede became a member of the First Tee of Greater Sacramento in 2001, volunteering 169 hours, was named one of only 66 national First Tee Scholars for the Class of 2012, and played in the 2012 Champions Tour, Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.  He has volunteered over 1295 hours in the Elk Grove and Sacramento communities and was honored as the Sacramento Junior Icon for 2012, the Sacramento Chapter of the Links, Inc., as one of the Links Achievers for 2012, and was honored with a Presidential Gold Volunteer Award by the White House.

In 2009, Reede befriended Champions Tour and Charles Schwab Cup Winner Loren Roberts resulting in his donation of $70,000 to the Elk Grove School District to preserve the golf programs at the nine district high schools that were to be cut due to budget problems.  His investment has paid off.  He designed and built a solar-powered trash compactor as his senior project and won the Excellence in Engineering Award, the SMUD Energy Project Award and 3rd Place Overall at the Sacramento Regional Engineering & Science Fair.

Reede had an article published on the USGA JuniorLinks website in 2007, plays the Jazz Saxophone, and has a 1st Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
