Reaffirming commitment to diversity, Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E. Church (COR) saluted Hispanic Heritage Month with a festive worship service on September 30 at 46 Maxwell in Irvine.
The occasion also celebrated the partnership between COR Pastor Mark E. Whitlock II and Pastor Santos Chavez of Street Light Church in Westminster to reinstate 30 local Hispanic ministers as volunteers in Orange County jails.
Participants included the Rev. Chavez, U.S. Congresswoman Karen Bass, Assemblyman Donald Wagner and Assistant OC Sheriff Lee Trujillo. Vocalist Sara Escamilla sang bi-lingual selections and COR’s praise dance ministry, led by the Rev. Stephanie Butler Adams, performed in traditional Hispanic attire.
Also recognized were Gonzalo Mendez, whose parents led the charge to integrate California schools, and Sandra Robbie, a filmmaker uniting with Chapman University to promote OC Hispanic history.
