The Kirkland Education Institute of Brookins Community A.M.E. Church has teamed with LA Cares Mentoring Program to launch a pilot tutoring and mentoring instruction.

The sessions began Oct. 16 and will continue every Tuesday at 6 p.m. for the next six weeks in the Brookins Fellowship Hall, 4831 South Gramercy Place in Los Angeles.

Students in grades 4 through 12 are encouraged to participate. Classes will cover a variety of topics such as financial literacy, career preparation, alternative dispute resolution, social media, dress for success, and college preparation.

First Lady Yvette Williams, who has taken the lead on this project, said, “We are very fortunate to have the blessing of Episcopal Supervisor Mary Kirkland. She is a retired teacher and her platform is to engage the youth both inside and outside the church.

“I’ve also reached out to other community leaders to get involved in mentoring and tutoring youth. We must use all of the resources available to assist our students. We want them to learn additional skills that sometimes are not available to them in the traditional school day.”

Verizon Wireless, who provided a grant to LA Cares for the supplies and refreshments, sponsors the pilot program.  Space is limited and students will be accommodated on a first come first served basis.

Pastor C. Dennis Williams and the Brookins church family encourage parents to enroll their children in the program.
