David Roberts

David Roberts was born in Los Angeles and raised by his mother, Linda, an LAUSD teacher for 30 years, and father, Herbert, a Director at the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development for 40 years. After graduating from Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, CA, David received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a minor in Business Administration from the University of California at Los Angeles. Before working as the Associate Director of Local Government Affairs for USC, David served as Economic Development Director for Councilmembers Mark Ridley Thomas and Bernard C. Parks. The Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative honored David with the Outstanding City Partner Award, citing his skill, expertise, and passion for community. He serves on numerous local boards and commissions including the Figueroa Corridor Partnership Business Improvement District, Friends of Expo Center, Los Angeles Trade Tech Citizens Advisory Committee, the City’s Proposition K Oversight Committee, and South LA Initiatives Working Group.

As a Southern California native, community leader, and former Economic Development Director, David understands we need energetic, collaborative, and experienced leadership to revitalize and champion District 9, so we get our fair share. He knows the kind of time, tenacity, and dedication it takes to get things done in City Hall. By listening to you and collaborating with all community stakeholders, we can reimagine South LA, expand educational opportunities, ensure safer streets, and create job opportunities.

David on the Issues

Economic Development and Jobs for South LA

I see the great potential of South Los Angeles and know that we can capitalize on this progress and continue to bring greater job opportunities. Our community deserves more well-paying jobs that support families right here in the 9th District. I will work with businesses, non-profits, local workforce centers, and community members to create jobs and provide vocational skills training and apprenticeship opportunities for our residents. We have a real opportunity to modernize our infrastructure, better utilize our commercial and industrial space, and train our workforce to develop a new, business-friendly district in our City.

Strong Education, Families, and Communities

We are so fortunate to have a premiere research university, the University of Southern California, and the City’s best trade school, LA Trade-Tech, right here in our district. When elected, I will use my experience, knowledge, and relationships with these institutions to increase the opportunities for our youth and adults. But we need to start promoting education even earlier than that. We are blessed to have active, engaged parents who are trying to make their children’s schools more responsive to the community’s needs. I will work with parents, schools, teachers, and our business and philanthropic community to ensure that our children secure the resources needed to expand their opportunities and ensure their future success.

Safer Streets, Better Infrastructure, Fair Treatment

During my time with the City, I worked directly with the people of Los Angeles to bring jobs and services, along with housing, grocery stores, restaurants, museums, libraries, swimming pools, soccer fields, skate parks, and transportation improvements totaling over $2 billion. When elected, I will continue to fight for our fair share of City resources, including first responders and law enforcement. I am the only candidate with a strong track record of delivering projects and policies that have made a measureable difference in the lives of our community.
