In the day and age of social media, the talking never stops. While you are sleeping, news is brewing. The weather gets bad, check your twitter. A celebrity shows up in your local grocery store, you can find a picture of it on Facebook. The world is constantly updating those around them of what's going on.
This Taste of Soul got to see exactly what social media could do. Over the weekend of Taste of Soul, its Facebook reached over 80,000 people. The previous week, the count was a little over 22,000 people. This means that in a week's time, around 57,000 more people were reached! People are "reached" when those who like the Facebook page, share posts with their friends. Through sharing posts, a spider web effect takes place between those knowledgeable with the Taste of Soul vs. those who may not have heard of the event. The Taste of Soul twitter also reached new limits as it started trending in California the day of Taste of Soul, with the hashtag 'tasteofsoulla'. Taste of Soul's actual website tasteofsoulla.org crashed its server the week of the family festival due to large amounts of traffic.
There were various interesting statistics about who is engaging with the Taste of Soul Facebook. The primary age group sharing and talking about Taste of Soul, are ages 45-54, with the age group 35-44 trailing closely behind. Around sixty-two percent (62%) of those engaging over Facebook were women. The statistics expand even further. Not only is Taste of Soul being talked about in various cities of California and even Nevada, it has reached several other states and about 19 different countries. This promotes an idea of how strong Taste of Soul is becoming over the years.
Facebook and Twitter were pivotal to this Taste of Soul because of the heavy push for voter registration and the acknowledgement of new transportation advancements in the community through Metro. On the Taste of Soul website, it promoted the new transportation Expo Line to its users, providing them with a link to click that shows how to use the services. Metro saw huge success from Taste of Soul from people using their services, to people inquiring about job opportunities within the company. Although news of this new transportation line could have been discovered via newspaper/word of mouth/broadcast news, the promotional efforts the website provided could have also had huge contributions as well.
Another key purpose social media served in this year's Taste of Soul were the push for attendees to register to vote. Various vendors provided several different booths people could register at. Some attendees even said they were thankful to be able to register right before the deadline while still enjoying themselves. Major artists like Eric Benet, who performed on the KJLH stage during Taste of Soul, were promoting using your voice to vote. He uses his Twitter to also promote voting, which in turn affects all his "Followers" on Twitter. Celebrities have an even larger influence on the community, so verbally telling the audience to vote and doing the same via Internet, is solidifying an idea he believes strongly in. As people, we often become influenced to do things by seeing how strongly others feel about it.
The fascinating effect social media has is the ability to get people to do their own research. For some, Facebook and Twitter provide them information before any other format. News travels fast word of mouth, but over the Internet, news travels much faster. Because of this benefit, it is important to keep up with technology. Being up to date with it can actually save you money. With gas being so expensive and rising, doing things via the Internet can save dollars. Businesses now promote their services via the Internet with an incentive that it's cheaper to do so. Some companies will allow you to pay your bills online for free. No longer will you pay money for stamps to even send the bill over to pay, let alone spend gas money to get to the actual company to pay your bills. All it takes is simply registering to get an e-mail address. These can be made through many different websites such as Yahoo, Google and Aol. These avenues are free and once an e-mail address is created, the sky is the limit.
You can shop online, you could have registered to vote, you can keep up with your children's grades in school, find deals and coupons for products and you can keep up with the constant ever-changing news going on in the world. You miss out on everything, when you aren't up to date with technology. Save money and move digital and experience breakthroughs like the Taste of Soul did!
