Ellender Julian turns 105 years old!

Ellender Julian dances her way to another birthday, reminding everyone to "Live, Laugh & Love!"

Originally from New Orleans, LA, Julian was born Ellender Darensbourg on November 1, 1907. Throughout her adolescence, Julian attended school while also participating in choir and drama productions. Along the same lines, Julian was one of the only Black women to take part in a song selection at the Eucharistic Congress, an esteemed gathering within the Catholic religion. Influenced by her relationship with God, Julian's passion was also apparent in her role as a mother.

Julian was very involved with the Parent Teacher Association, advocating for all students including her two children Lorraine and Thomas. Serving as treasurer, secretary, and counselor of many organizations, Julian was not limited in capability. Julian and her husband became a part of the church family at Holy Name of Jesus after joining the community of Los Angeles in 1960. Throughout the childhood of Lorraine and Thomas, Julian was very instrumental, always encouraging them to, "stay close to God, to be kind and helpful."

Amidst gaining residence in Los Angeles, Julian and her husband assisted several family members from Louisiana in establishing themselves. They gave even when they didn't have to give and impacted so many lives in the process. Known to many in their church family as "'Mommie" and "Poppie," Julian and her husband loved each other, people, God and the spirit of determination.

Since the age of 85, Julian has celebrated her birthdays consecutively with lavish parties filled with family and friends. When asked, Julian shared, "I love to dance. I love people and I love nice movies." With the same enjoyment, Julian gave some words of advice. "Be gentle because you can't live long with a short fuse." We look forward to hearing from Ms. Ellender Julian next year for another grand celebration. Congratulations and best wishes.
